'A' NU 02630235 and 'B' NU 03140216. In the early part of the 19th century a cross was standing at each end of Thropton village. That at the west end stood at the junction of two roads, and may have been a boundary cross (a small field near the site is known as Mere Peul) or placed there as a guide to the Hospitium of St Leonard at Allerdene, on the opposite side of the River Coquet. The second cross stood in the angle formed by these roads at the east end of the village in front of what is now the Cross Keys Inn. Probably this cross indicated the proximity of the hospital on the site of which stands Wreighburn House. (1)

Mr Swinburn, who lives at the Post Offoce in Thropton and who is 96, has known the village for 88 years. He has never seen the crosses in this time, though he has heard reference to them. Several local enquiries revealed no local knowledge of them.
There are no traces of crosses to be seen at the road junction west of the village, or outside the Cross Keys Inn.
The field name Mere Peul (Authority 1 refers) is not known locally. Mrs Davies, Demesne Farm, whose husband owns the fields on either side of the modern road at the juntion referred to, has heard reference to the name. (2)
