Cist (Whitton and Tosson)
On the first or lower ridge of Spital Hill, between the 700 and 800 feet contours and 300yds SW of burial No 2 (Northum 49 NE 33) is a small mound. Inside was a cist of irregular shape formed by five slabs of unequal sizes. The cist, oriented NNE-SSW, was 3ft 6ins long, 1ft 8ins wide and 1ft 6ins deep. It was completely empty but had probably contained an inhumation. Excavated in 1889. (1)
[Marginal] The siting information in authority (1) appears to be incorrect. The lower ridge of Spital Hill appears only north and north-west of the second ridge on which burial No 2 is situated. A burial south west of the latter would either be between the 800 and 900 feet contour and on the second ridge or on the steep western slopes where there is no ridge. Perambulation of the latter area revealed no trace of a mound. (2)
No further siting information. (3)
