Reputed Austin Friary at Berwick (Berwick upon Tweed)
There is considerable doubt as to the existence of an Austin Friary at Berwick. References to it are few and may apply to the other orders which existed. (1)
It seems that in 1301 Edward I gave 4s to the order. A document dated 1406-7 refers to the Prior of St Austin at Berwick. It is highly probable that this house was none other than the Augustinian hospital at Segden, at or near, Berwick [NT 95 NE 1]. (2)
No further information. (3)
There is no conclusive evidence for an Austin Friary at Berwick. References to Augustinian friars at Berwick may in fact be to the Segden Hermitage two miles north of Berwick (HER 2392, NT 95 NE 1) which is well documented between 1329-30. (4)
