Velvet Hall Railway Station (Horncliffe)
Velvet Hall Railway Station, on NER line from Tweedmouth to Sprouston Junction. By Benjamin Green for the Newcastle and Berwick Railway. So-called Tudor style. In domestic use.
Initially owned by the Newcastle and Berwick Railway, then the York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway from 9 August 1847, the North Eastern Railway from 1854, the London and North Eastern Railway from 1923 and British Railways from 1948. The branch from Tweedmouth to Kelso was opened as far as Sprouston on 27 July 1849 and reached Kelso on 1 June 1851. The line connected with the North British Railway at Sprouston Junction. Closed to passengers 4 July 1954 and to goods 29 March 1965. (1)
Velvet Hall Railway Station is named after a local house as the nearest village is over a mile away. The station was a two-storey house with offices on the Kelso platform and a waiting shelter on the other platform. The complex also included a signal box and goods shed. The station building is now a private residence with the up platform, some gate posts and fragments of walling to be seen. (2)
