Cropmarks (Horncliffe)

Cropmarks of a possible Iron Age/Romano-British settlement are visible at NT 911486. (1)

Nothing visible on OS air photographs. (2)

An Iron Age settlement or fort, centred at NT 9106 4861, is visible as a cropmark on air photographs. This is a pentagonal enclosure consisting of two concentric ditches (the outer ditch is slightly wider than the inner). They are spaced 8m apart. There is an east facing entrance that leads into a central area measuring 0.21ha. Within this area there is a large but diffuse macula measuring 28m north/south by 18m transversely. (3)
