Roman period settlement and enclosure on Brands Hill (Cheviotside)
(NT 98032322) Camp. (1)
A massive Homestead of Votadinian Type, but rectangular. Three huts on platform at south end. (2)
South Cowboys Cairn. An oval earthwork with single rampart enclosing approximately 1/4 acre. (3)
Type H2 (Huts or stock enclosures). (4)
NT 98082322. A sub-rectangular enclosure situated on the north-east slope of the hill, of earth and stone banks of maximum width of 4m, maximum height 1.2m. Traces of outside revetting. Entrance to the east with an out-turned bank on the north side, and an in-turned bank on the south side.
Three hut circles in the higher south half of enclosure of average diameter 7m. The hut circle in the south-west corner is subdivided by a north-east to south-west bank with a central entrance. The north-west corner, south to the hut circles, is scooped to a depth of 1m.
Gaps in the ramparts to north and south are probably modern. From the south-east corner of the enclosure, a fragmentary bank of earth and stones runs south-west for 13m.
Nearest water supply is a stream to north and east.
A scooped enclosure with simple hut circles is usually attributed to native origin. (5)
Listed under Romano-British enclosed stone built settlements. (6)
A good example of this type of settlement, the unorthodox sub-rectangular form being dictated by the topography. Revised at 6 inch scale. (7)
Adjacent to the above, on its north-west side, is a similarly constructed circular enclosure about 18.5m in diameter, and scooped into the slope. An ill-defined break in the north-east may be the entrance. There is no trace of any internal features. (8)
No conditional change since reports of 6/10/55, 25/8/69 and 15/2/75.
The work measures overall about 40m south-west by north-east by about 30m transversely.
There is no physical connection between the circular enclosure described by authority 7 and the main enclosure, but the generally similar construction technique suggests they are contemporary. Surveyed at 1:10,000 on MSD. (9)
Scheduled. (10)
NT 978233 Settlement one mile (1610m) W of South Middleton; scheduled. (11a)
