Prehistoric enclosures and field system north-west of Langlee Crags (Cheviotside)
(Centred NT 964224) Two enclosures and other marks. ?Habitation site. ?Trackway. (1)
The general situation is a slight north-west slope overlooking the valley.
'A' NT 96382245. A sub rectangular enclosure with banks of earth and stone, average width 3m, maximum height 0.5m. No trace of internal habitation. No evidence for dating.
'B' NT 96372236. An enclosure or irregular shape with a bank of earth and stone much robbed. Where complete the bank has an average width of 3m with a maximum height of 0.5m. The only indication of internal habitation is in the north-east corner where there is a semi-circular bank, possibly the remains of a hut circle. No evidence for dating.
'C' NT 96422235. The remains of what appears to be a double hut circle or possibly a robbed cairn.
'D' Centred NT 96412250. A group of five cairns, varying in diameter from 3m to 5m and in height from 0.3m to 0.5m. No trace of retaining circle or ditch.
'E' Centred NT 96302233. A group of 11 cairns, varying in diameter from 3.5m to 6m, and in height from 0.2m to 0.6m. No trace of retaining circle or ditch.
Extends from NT 96112213 to NT 96342231. Traces of a double trackway running from the small stream to the south-west towards enclosure 'B'. Near the stream it appears as two well defined hollow ways. There are faint traces of other banks and mounds in the area but they are too fragmentary for any conclusions to be drawn as to their purpose. (2)
Both enclosures (A and B) are of simple form without apparent entrances. Only 'B' has any internal remains in the shape of two small semi-circular features, neither of which is identifiable as a hut site, abutting the enclosure bank on the north-east side.
The two groups of cairns (D and E) are almost certainly stone clearance, particularly 'D' where three of the five cairns form the angle of a distinct field bank; and 'C' is either a mutilated natural mound, or further debris, but is clearly not a hut-circle.
The whole is similar to other small complexes which occur in permutations of steadings, enclosures and fields at the higher levels throughout the area, and are representative of minor colonisation continuous from medieval to recent times. Sketch survey at 1:2500 of enclosures. (3)
No conditional change since reports of 16/9/55 and 20/10/69. Assessment by authority 3 agreed. The pattern of settlement does not represent an independent deserted village.
Enclosures (A and B) surveyed at 1:10,000 on MSD. (4)
NT 964223: A detailed 1:1250 survey of the Langlee Crags site revealed further round houses and clearance cairns. Doubt was expressed by the authors as to the medieval or recent date of the sites given by Authy 3. (5)
NT 964224. Langlee Crags unenclosed settlement. [Plan]. (6)
Scheeduled. (7)
NT 963 224. Round cairns and old enclosures NW of Langlee Crags. Scheduled No ND/537. (8a)
