Roman period settlement and field system on Brands Hill (Cheviotside)
(NT 97972401) Camp. [NR] (1)
A circular earthwork with single rampart enclosing approximately 1/4 acre. (2)
Listed as a Romano-British enclosed stone-built settlement (Brands Hill No 7). A small adjoining series of walled paddocks connected with stone huts appears to be contemporary, although instances of developed field systems associated with this type of settlement are exceptional. (3)
The 'camp' is an oval enclosure formed by a strong rubble bank laced with orthostats, and containing two stone-founded hut istes. It is surrounded by a 'flask-shaped' work constructed, in the main, by boulder walling. The neck of the flask is to the south east, and provides a controlled entrance. From this nucleus, a complex of small stone-founded hut groups linked by denuded rubble walling extends to the north west (Centred NT979244).
The main enclosure is a good example of the local type of native settlement, and the huts and fields are undoubtedly an extension of it. Surveyed at 1:2500. (4)
NT 979240 No conditional change since report of 26/9/69.
The main enclosure measures overall about 28m north-south by about 24m transversely, whilst the hut groups and field system to the north-west extends over an area of approximately 2-1/4 hectares.
Surveyed at 1:10,000 on MSD. (5)
SAM management agreement (6).
Brands Hill site 7. Fields identified near Romano-British settlement. Small paddocks connected to settlement enclosure and some outlying roundhouses. (7)
Scheduled. (8)
