Middleton Hall (Earle)

NT 998255: Deserted Medieval Village at Middleton Hall. (1)

NT 989254. Middleton Hall deserted medieval village. Documentary references: 1296, 1336, 1541, 1580, 1665, 1669, 1821. The site of the old settlement probably lay in the vicinity of the former bastle houses both of which seem to have lain to the south of the present mansion at NT 989254. It is recorded that one of these with 7ft thick walls was removed when the new farm offices were erected in 1806 (see NT 92 NE 11). (2)

NT 998255: Deserted Medieval Village at Middleton Hall. (3a)

The gazetteer gives NT 998 255 as the grid reference for this site but the O/S quartersheet shows Middleton Hall itself is at NT 988 225. It is therefore to be presumed that 998 is the wrong easting and was given in error for 988. (3b)
N1568
