The Battle Stone (Akeld)
(NT 96822946) Battle Stone. (1)
Some 50 years ago (c1881) a cist was found about 5 to 10 yards west of the stone which is popularly associated with Battle of Homildon 1402. This find suggests that the stone was connected with a Bronze Age burial and not the Battle. The cist is said to have contained a 'bronze sword handle' - possible a flat bronze axe. (2)
An upright stone 6ft 6in high with a diameter (circumference?) of 12ft supposed to commemorate the battle of 1402 but probably much older. The field name is Red Rigs. (3)
A large upright boulder of granite, now used as a rubbing stone, of weathered appearance. It has stood upon the site for a long time, but its connection with the cist is uncertain and the Battle of Homildon Hill purely legendary. The stone is 2m high (see photograph). Location of the find not ascertained. No surface evidence of the cist. (4)
Condition unchanged. (5)
Probably a Bronze Age standing stone. (6)
NT 96820 29460. No change to previous field reports. Published survey (25 inch) correct. (7)
Scheduled. (8)
NT 968 294. The Battle Stone, Humbleton. Scheduled No ND/148. (9a)
General association with HER 1538. (10)
