Prehistoric settlement and field system on Hart Heugh (Earle)
(NT 9709 2577) Primitive enclosures at foot of a cliff. (1)
The remains of a group of old sheepfolds and lambing pens, one of many scattered along the lower slopes of Hart Heugh. (2)
NT 972 258. An area of sheepfolds and enclosures can be sub-divided as follows:
A: NT 97162578. Two conjoined sub-circular enclosures abutting an east facing outcrop of natural rock. The south one measuring about 36m by 35m and the north one 25m by 35m, between the centres of earth and stone banks, maximum width 1.5m between facing stones by 0.8m. Abutting the east side of each enclosure is a smaller sub-rectangular enclosure measuring 22m by 6m and 10m by 5m respectively, formed by similar walling to the main enclosures. Each of the smaller enclosures forms a level platform on the hillslope and is connected to the larger enclosures by mutilated entrances about 1m wide. About 50m north-west are the remains of a field bank or wall which from its form and construction would appear to be contemporary with the enclosures. The whole probably represent a medieval complex of sheep enclosures with associated lambing pens or attendant buildings. Surveyed at 1:10,000.
B: NT 97212579 A 'dumb-bell' shaped enclosure, maximum measurements 10m by 6m, formed by a turf covered stony bank 0.3m high. It has a relatively modern appearance.
C: NT 97232580. A badly mutilated probably circular enclosure about 3m in diameter slightly cut into the hillslope. Most likely contemporary with D.
D: NT 97242580 An enclosure measuring 3.6m in diameter between the centres of a turf covered consolidated stony bank spread to about 1m It is slightly cut into the hillside to a depth of 0.4m. There is no trace of an entrance.
E: NT 97232584 An oval shaped enclosure measuring 7m north-south by 5m between the centres of a turf covered stony wall, maximum 0.3m in height.
F: NT 97242587 Similar to E but measuring 8.8m by 7m and partially destroyed on the north side.
B, E and F are probably the remains of relatively modern sheepfolds or lambing pens, C and D possibly being the remains of stone founded shepherd's huts associated with them. (3)
NT 970260: Scheduled under 'Camps and Settlements' as Settlements on and north of Hart Heugh. (4)
Settlements on and north of Hart Heugh. SAM 393/c. Four hut circles and an enclosure, partly inside F.C. area, only footings survive. (5)
