Excavations took place on the possible site of a Carmelite Friary in 2001. A number of rubbish pits were excavated and contained animal bones and seashells, as well as ash and clinker from hearths. Many fragments of medieval pottery were also recovered. Soil samples showed the rubbish contained remains of barley, wheat, breadwheat, oat and rye grains. Industrial waste products indicated ironworking was carried out in the vicinity. The medieval ground level was much lower than the modern-day street level.
