Target operator bunker, cable trenching and three target pits north of Hopehead (Otterburn)
NY 89589742. Remains of a target operator bunker, three target pits and associated cable trenches located outside the eastern boundary of the Davyshiel Field Firing Box on the Otterburn Army Training Estate. It was one of a group of five, which formed a small arms training area constructed from 1962 to 1964. The bunker comprises a square, concrete blockhouse entered through an underground passage. The passage itself is approached by a flight of steps, protected by concrete blast walls. A third blast wall protects the western side of the blockhouse. The bunker is capped with earth and turf and its south, east and west sides are encased in a mound of soil. The bunker contained a system of cables and levers which were manually operated to raise and lower three remote targets across the firing area. This target apparatus is located against the north wall of the bunker. The cables led from this point to a distribution box located in front of the north side of the bunker. The trenches which held the cables survive as linear depressions roughly 0.4 metres deep. The three target pits lie west, north and south east of the bunker. They are visible as wood-lined hollows containing the metal remains of the target mechanism. Scheduled. (1)
