The Carts settlement and field system (Simonburn)

This is a five-sided enclosure on the crest of a hill overlooking the Hopeshield Burn. It is marked by a low bank with an entrance midway through the north-east facing side. At least one hut circle is visible in the interior. It is probably the remains of a Roman period settlement. (1-3)

Probable Iron Age/Roman enclosure and possible field system is visible as earthworks on air photographs centred at NY 833 734. The embanked enclosure measures approximately 39m by 37m and potentially had five sides one of which is obscured by a modern field boundary. There is a smaller curvilinear enclosure within of approximately 9m diameter. Attached to the polygonal enclosure is a larger incomplete enclosure, which may be part of a field system. Its banks extend south for 175m. (4a)
