Devil's Causeway Roman Road (Netherwitton; Capheaton)
Five small trenches dug by archaeologists in 2001 at Netherwitton found the remains of the Roman road, known locally as the Devil's Causeway. The road had a central area of worked blocks, on either side of which were water worn cobbles. No Roman objects were found. Possible remains of the Roman road were also revealed near Kearsley Farm at Kirkheaton in 2015. Earthwork remains are visible on air photographs and lidar west of Belsay at Brandy Well Hall.
