Medieval and later field system north of Vindolanda (Henshaw)

An old field system shows up on aerial photographs taken of fields just north of Vindolanda. The fields have dykes around them and have broad ridge and furrow cultivation in them. (1)

Medieval ridge and furrow is visible as earthworks on air photographs, centred at NY 7732 6706. The area is quite extensive (0.6 x 1.3 km) and lies to the north of Bradley Burn. Some areas have been overploughed in the post medieval period and have split the broad medieval rig into narrower rig. There are a few other interspersed areas of post medieval narrow rig included in this record. Survival of the earthworks is good, as seen on the latest photography in 1992. (2a-b)

General association with HER 12379 (stack stand), HER 32432 (ridge and furrow). (2)
