Post-medieval enclosure and field system near Saughy Rigg (Melkridge)

Farmers built this roughly rectangular enclosure surrounded by a sod cast bank, north-west of Saughy Rigg, at an unknown date in the post-medieval period. Within and outside the enclosure are the remains of broad ridge and furrow cultivation, visible today as earthworks. (1)

Sod cast boundaries defining fields of post medieval date show on aerial photographs as earthworks in the area between Long Syke and Black Hill in Melkridge parish, in area NY 734 684. A possible stock enclosure is attached to one boundary bank at NY 7365 6843. (2a-b)
