Plainfield (Snitter)

Three barrows were opened at Plainfield, one a cairn which was 25 feet in diameter, and was set round with stones, and 2 feet high. Within as a cist 5 feet long east to west and an urn 7in high, jar-shaped with chevron ornament, but broken. The second about 100 yards north-west on a 'knowe' 12 feet in diameter, set round with stones. Within were a cist and an urn with chevron ornament, but broken. Another, east of Plainfield, in a field called the Bank - a low cairn with a broken urn. (1)

Three barrows opened when land was being reclaimed for cultivation. (Description as in authority 1). (2)

(Listed under 'Urns known from literature only' and as 'Destroyed'). (3)

The owner-farmer of Plainfield who has lived there for 20 years has never heard reference to a field by the name of the Bank (Authority 1 refers), and has not seen any barrow in the vicinity. He added that all the fields at Plainfield have regularly been under the plough in recent years.
In a perambulation, no traces of any cairns were found. The present location of the cists found is not known. (4)

Three cinerary urns from Plainfield (as (1) above). Now lost. (5)
