Salt pan, Cowpen Square (Blyth)
Between 1153 and 1165 James de Bolam and Gilbert Lis Sol granted to the Prior and Convent at Brinkburn a salt pan at Aynewick - assumed to be near Cowpen Square. They were abandoned about 1589. (1-5)
No further information was discovered regarding the site of these salterns. Cowpen Square is now waste land and the ground in the vicinity is occupied by houses, shipbuilding yards and a colliery. (6)
