Artillery Firing Range (Newbiggin-by-the-Sea)
Artillery firing range. Destroyed. Possible target practice area. Oval-shaped target moving track, and bank to stop stray shells. Also, firing area. Adjacent rectangular platforms. Surveyed during Defence of Britain Project. (1)(3a)
A Second World War firing range and associated military road, trackway, at NZ 3040 8587 and potential pillbox (at NZ 3019 8562) are visible as structures and earthworks on air photographs taken in 1947. The firing range was an air gunnery range. The earthwork bank appears to be extant on the latest 1999 Ordnance Survey vertical photography. No surface remains of the structures are visible, except for a small section that appears to have fallen onto the beach, due to coastal erosion. (2)(3b)
