Sandy Lane, North Seaton. NZ 301863. Finds in Museum of Antiquities accession number 1979.57. Site found by J Weyman north of the mouth of the River Wansbeck, beside the caravan site at Sandy Bay. It lies c1/4 mile inland on a small sandstone outcrop in a boulder clay area. Largely post-Mesolithic material but some earlier pieces - 13 cores, possible microlith and tiny scrapers. (4)
A small area of fieldwalking was carried out alongside the track to the caravan park at Sandy Bay between 2004 and 2006. This recovered a series of 337 flints with 33 recognisable either complete or broken tools as scrapers or blades. Most of this material was a light brown to dark brown, often mottled, flint - though other colours were recorded. The majority of the flints recovered are Mesolithic in date including a retouched scrapers, burin and microlith. Other flints include thumbnail scrapers of Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date. Mesolithic/Neolithic flints found on gentle, sandy hillock over an area of about 5 acres surrounded by boulder clay. Collected in 1973 by Dr J Weyman. Very obviously a mixed assemblage. Includes retouched tools, debitage and cores. PaMeLA id 13100, artefact id 21363 to 21368. (6)
