Newsham (Blyth)
NZ 305 790 Newsham listed as a deserted medieval village. (1)
Newsham, prior to recent development consisted of three farmsteads at NZ 309 791, NZ 3110 7892 and NZ 3019 7906 respectively. There is no visible evidence of depopulation on the ground and the village therefore was probably of the non-nucleated type. (2)
In the 13th century most of the township was in moieties, both held by the Delavals. The remainder - lands and a tenement - had been granted to the hospital of St Mary, Newcastle, c.1200. Three people were listed in the 1296 Lay Subsidy. In 1312 nine people were assessed.
A list of townships of 1539 recorded Newsham comprised six and a half and one sixth farms. The number of tenements had declined to four by 1717. A rental 1723 indicates only two of the tenements remained at Newsham itself. In addition there were five cottages.
The site of the medieval settlement is uncertain. The manor house stood on the site of the present North Farm, the medieval village may have been adjacent. Aerial photographs indicate banks in the field to the west of the farmstead, and they appear to be overlain by ridge and furrow. Most of the site is beneath a colliery tip. (3)
NZ 305 790. Newsham deserted medieval village. (4)
It is thought that there is a low potential for the survival of the site in the area of Newsham North Farm given the previous disturbance of this area. (5)
