Village Cross (Ulgham)
[NZ 2322 9231] Cross. (1)
The village [Ulgham] cross, standing 4 feet high with steps leading up to it now weathered and worn by whetting. (2)
It is probably of the 14th or 15th century. (3)
The village cross consists of a weathered shaft and socket stone standing on a pedestal of three steps, and is now enclosed by a modern stone wall on all sides except the north.
The rectangular section of the shaft measures 0.4m x 0.25m at the base and although badly weathered appears to taper slightly. The shaft is 1.6m high and there are traces of chamfered corners and of vertical grooves on each of the narrower faces.
The socket stone is 0.9m square and 0.5m high.
The pedestal of three steps appears to have been disturbed probably when the enclosing wall was built, and the space between the top step and this wall is now filled with overgrown rubbish and loose stone. The exact form and true dimensions of the pedestal could therefore not be ascertained. (4)
Condition unchanged. (5)
Village Cross, grade II listed building. Medieval. Overall height 3m. Stands in a recess in roadside wall, behind 20th century railings. (6)
