Penannular enclosure (Blyth)
Crop mark of a penannular enclosure on a river terrace above the River Blyth. Broad ditch broken by one (or two?) closely adjacent entrances. Traces of a faint mark in the centre (a pit?). No sign of a bank. Measures c.15m internal diameter. Lies near a large rectilinear ditched enclosure (NZ 28 SE 17). It cannot be ruled out as henge-related. (1)
This possible penannular Neolithic enclosure is only visible as a cropmark on air photos taken in the early 1970s (of the photos examined for this project). However air photos taken in 2009, when the field was under grass, do show lusher, green vegetation and some taller plants following the ditch of this feature. The internal area is sub-circular in plan, with a slightly flattened northern side, though this may be a consequence of later ploughing across the monument. Internally it measures approximately 13m in diameter. The two gaps are in the western side of the enclosure but it is not certain that these are real causeways or mere hiatus in the cropmark. This monument lies just 10m to the north of an area impacted by late 20th century open cast mining. (2) (3)
