(NZ 20138569) Court House. (1)

The Court House, Grade II*
1821, the great gateway and adjacent part of the goal, of which the rest has been demolished. Designed by John Dobson, winning a competition. Not as original as his Newcastle Gaol gateway but a dignified 'castellated' structure, built of stone. (2)

Morpeth Tower stood on the site of the old gaol behind the massive gatehouse. No trace remains. (3)

The Court House. Former courthouse, and gateway to former gaol. 1822 by John Dobson. Castellated Gothic style. (4)

Originally part of a much larger complex of the County Gaol, with its detention wings and associated accommodation. The early 18th century prison buildings were demolished at the end of the 19th century at which date the present police station was built. The Court House remained in use as a Magistrates Court and occasional County Court until 1980 when they transferred to Bedlington. (5)(6)(7)(8)

When the sewers of the gaol were formed several human skeletons were found. (9)
