Hospital of St James (Cramlington)
A hospital probably for travellers and poor pilgrims was founded pre-AD 1201 at Hartford Bridge and dedicated to St James. Dissolved pre-AD 1378. (a) Granted to Brinkburn Priory before AD 1378, a chaplain to be maintained to serve the chapel here. (b)(1)
Founded by Richard de Plessis, the hospital stood at the top of the south bank of the Blyth, immediately to the west of the highroad, and in the parish of Stannington. (2)
NZ 24317986 In the area referred to by the NCH is a small banked enclosure immediately to the west of the road.
It is complete, except for the north west corner, measures 22m east-west and 13.4m north-south, and its banks contain many undressed stones. This is probably the site of the hospital.
The field adjacent on the south is called 'Chapel Close'. (3)
As described. Surveyed at 1/2500. (4)
