Church of St Giles (Netherwitton)

St Giles' Church, 18th century. All gothicised in 1886 except for virile bell-cote crowned with obelisk. Font: plain circular bowl. Plate: chalice of 1726. Monument: effigy of a Lady, 14th century? (1)

Church of St Giles, Grade II*. Chancel possibly 12th century, altered in 15th century, nave rebuilt in 18th century and remodelled, with addition of vestry, 1886. Aisled three-bay nave with south porch, chancel with vestry on north. 19th century work in 14th/15th century style. 18th century bellcote. South chancel wall with inserted priest's door, lintel dated 1691, 15th century window in east end.
Interior: nave arcades 1864. Medieval chancel arch. Fittings mainly 19th century and later. 13th/14th century font. 14th century female effigy. 14th/15th century cross slab to south. 15th century cross slab in north wall of chancel. Two 12th century chevron voussoirs and 12th/13th century cross slab head. Milton tiles in sanctuary. (2)

Church includes a war memorial with a brass plaque bearing the inscription "THIS TABLET IS ERECTED TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN LOVING MEORY OF/ ALL THOSE, BOTH MEN AND WOMEN, WHO PATRIOTICALLY ASSISTED BY JOINING/ THE COLOURS TO PROSECUTE THE GREAT WAR TO A SUCCESSFUL ISSUE AND ALSO TO THE/ SACRED, PROUD AND UNDYING MEMORY OF THE FOLLOWING BOTH OF THE REGULAR, NEW AND TERRITORIAL ARMY WHO GALLENTLY AND NOBLY RESPONDED TO THEIR COUNTY'S/ CALL IN THE HOUR OF NEED AND MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE IN THE GREAT WAR OF 1914-1918/ (NAMES)/ "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS"/ ERECTED BY THE GRATEFUL AND PROUD RELATIVES AND FRIENDS OF THE ABOVE MENTIONED/ RESIDING IN THE DISTRICTS OF NETHERWITTON, NUNNYKIRK AND WHITEHOUSE.".
