Church of St John the Baptist (Meldon)
Grade I, parish church. Early 13th century, restored 1849. (1)
The sanctuary pavement is by Minton. Probably installed in 1849 during Dobson's restoration. Includes roundels of St John the Evangelist. (2)
A church with an apparent simple and straightforward structural history. It seems to have been built very much in its present form in the earlier 13th century. A couple of low side windows could be late 13th or 14th century. Otherwise there is nothing else in the fabric pre-dating the 19th century, apart from some reddening of wall stones which may be the result of burning, perhaps in the Border Wars. It was recorded as ruinous in 1599 and at the beginning of the 18th century. The church was repaired and renovated in 1849 (by John Dobson) and in 1892. It retians good quality Victorian fittings and furnishings. (3)
