Enclosure (Meldon)
(NZ 1382 8417) Square dark soil mark. (1)
Aerial photographs show a square enclosure with sides of approximately 60m. No indications of entrance or internal features. The situation is on level ground just below the 300 foot contour. There is a good view in all directions except the west. The only surface indication is a ploughed-down ditch, average width 10m, maximum depth 0.3m. This corresponds with the south side of the enclosure. The field is known locally as 'Three Cornered Field'. The nearest water supply is a stream approximately 200m to the west. (2)
Molesden West 1. Slightly rounded corners, and an entrance midway along the east side. (Listed under rectangular enclosures consisting of a single ditch some of which are likely to fall in the context of Romano-British rectilinear settlements). (3)(4)
The vague traces of the enclosure on the ground previously noted by F1 form no intelligible remains. Nothing can be added to Jobey's description, and any classification of the site as Romano-British can only be tentative. (5)
