Prestwick Whins Iron Age/Romano-British settlement (Ponteland)

An aerial photograph of this site shows the cropmarks of a double-ditched rectangular enclosure of Iron Age or Roman date. (1-3)

NZ 1954 7239 (FCE): A rapid examination of air photographs (4b) reveals a large, rectangular enclosure (circa 60m by ?40m), visible as cropmarks. The enclosure is defined by a single ditch circuit. However, to the north and east of the enclosure, about 20 metres away, is another ditch which intermittently visible and roughly reflects the shape of the enclosure. (4a)

A rectilinear enclosure defined by two approximately parallel ditch circuits was seen as a cropmark and mapped from air photographs. Centred at NZ 1953 7238, the inner enclosure measures 56 m by 54 m; the second circuit is approximately 20 m distant. Both enclosures appear to have an entrance on the east. A third partially visible enclosure is seen attached to the south of the second circuit. Other partially visible enclosures are seen, similarly aligned, to both the north and south. (4c)
