Kirkley West Farm enclosure (Ponteland)
An aerial photograph of this site shows the cropmarks of a rectangular enclosure, possibly the remains of a Roman period settlement. It is overlain by medieval ridge and furrow. (1-3)
NZ 1287 7657 (centred): One, possibly two, sub-rectangular enclosures, each defined by a single ditch, are visible on air photographs (1999). The approximate dimensions of the enclosures, as far as is visible, are 72m by 62m and 108m by 105m. Upstanding ridge and furrow cultivation appears to partially respect the enclosures but also overlie them in places, implying an earlier Medieval or possibly Iron Age or Roman date for the enclosures.
