George Stephenson's Cottage (Wylam)
George Stephenson's Cottage, Grade II*. House. 18th century. Random rubble partly rendered. Pantile above stone slate menu. Central plank door. Flanking twelve-pane Yorkshire sashes. Small six-pane window above door. Continuous outshut to rear has 20th century windows. Steeply-pitched gabled roof edged by stone slates. Thin raised coping and two rebuilt brick end stacks. Plaque on front wall records birth here of George Stephenson on June 9th 1781. (1)

The cottage is noted in passing alongside the Wylam Wagonway, later the Scotswood, Newburn and Wylam Railway. The house was called Street House at the time of George Stephenson's birth. (4)
