Stone hammer (Netherwitton)

A fine hard holed sandstone hammer, 8-1/2ins long by 3-1/2ins broad at its widest part, by 2-7/12ins thick, with sloping sides, was found in a runner forming the boundary between Bellion and Longlee farms, a little to the west of Sandyford. Exhibited to the Society of Antiquaries Newcastle on 27th August 1902. (1)

The name 'Sandyford' is unknown locally, but an approximate find spot at NZ 093902 can be inferred from the description. The hammer is in the possession of Mr Thornton Trevelyan of Longwitton Hall. (2)
