Site Details

Round barrow (Rothley with Hollinghill)

(NZ 02479396) Tumulus. Excavated by W P Hedley, 10th July 1926. Burial by cremation. (1)

NZ 02489395. A small mound of stones 3m in diameter 0.3m high situated on a southern slope. No trace of ditch or retaining circle. (2)

The cairn associated by F1 with this site (surveyed at 1:2500) consists of little more than two or three dozen loosely piled stones. Physically it appears to be an unlikely covering mound for a cremation and its position in the low-lying corner of a pasture field rather suggests clearance. There is, however, nothing more appropriate to a tumulus in the vicinity, although the area to the south and east is now afforested. Hedley is now dead. (3)
