Romano-British settlement on Loundon Hill (Netherton with Biddlestone)

NT 949085. Loundon Hill. Listed under Romano-British enclosed stone-built settlements. (1)

NT 94810872. A fairly typical, but poorly preserved example of this type of native homestead, consisting of two circular rubble and earth enclosures, one with two external abutting hut circles. Surveyed at 1/2500. (2)

Clearly shown on aerial photographs. (3)

As described, the eastern enclosure measuring 25m north-south by 21m has been badly mutilated on the north-west side but about two thirds of the wall still stands to a height of 0.5m with a spread of 4m. There are no visible remains of occupation inside the enclosure. The western enclosure measuring 21m east-west by 18m is better preserved, the height and width of the wall being similar to the eastern one. Two hut stances project outward from the subcircular enclosure on the north-east side. The walls of these abutting hut circles stand 1m high, the more northerly circle being 7m diameter, the other is 5m diameter. Surveyed at 1:10,000. (4)

Romano-British settlement, 580m north west of Biddlestone Home Farm. Scheduled on 25th May 1994, national monument number 25047. (5)
