East Harle or Little Harle deserted medieval village, Kirkwhelpington (Kirkwhelpington)

Little Harle (and West Harle) seem to have originated as separate hamlets in a single township. The 1296 Lay Subsidy recorded nine taxpayers at Little Harle. No other reference to the size of the medieval settlement has been found. The Hearth Tax of 1666 listed nine houses in the township, but it is not known whether these represent a village or dispersed steadings. Armstrong's map of 1769 showed only the hall and park.
The village may have stood in the vicinity of the tower (NZ 08 SW 8). A possible village perimeter bank is visible on the north edge of the plantations to the west of the hall. Ridge and furrow runs up to this 'bank'. (1)

NZ 000830 Deserted medieval village at Little Harle. (2)

Any 'village' was probably deserted following the emparking of Littleharle Tower, but no surface indications of it survive. (3)
