Bronze Age cairn, The Fawns (Kirkwhelpington)
Barrow opened at a place called 'The Fawns' in Kirkwhelpington parish. It was 39ft in diameter, 3ft high, composed of earth and stone, and had been disturbed by some excavation and the insertion of a cattle rubbing post at the centre. West of the centre were found an adult
cremation in a hollow (no urn) and a child cremation in an inverted urn (rim missing) set over a flat stone (with cup mark on underside). At the centre fragments of another urn and cremation, probably broken by the inserting of the rubbing post. ('The Fawns' is a form of earthworks at NZ 007853, OS 6! 1948). (1)
Lower part of plain urn (a child cremation) and a fragment of a second urn (central cremation) now located in the British Museum. (2)
No barrows could be located in the immediate vicinity of 'the Fawns', but at NZ 01148470 (just over half a mile to the SE), there is a mound of approximately the given dimensions as with a hollow out rubbing stone in its centre, which must be Greenwell's barrow. (3)
Cup marked stone supporting a cinerary urn discovered at The Fawns, Kirkwhelpington. No further details. (4)
NZ 008853. The Fawns (H00741). Slab with a cup mark, now in British Museum. (5)
Two urns from Kirkwhelpington, one broken. Collared urn from primary burial in centre of barrow with cremation. Second vessel inverted over a flat stone (cup marked), contained cremation of a young person. (6)
NZ 0114 8469. Round cairn 220m west of Broom House. Scheduled RSM No 21000. An earth and stone cairn of Bronze Age date measuring 16m in diameter and up to 1.2m high. There is a hollow disturbance at the centre of the cairn in which cairn material is visible. This was the result of Greenwell's partial excavation in the 19th century. Both urns found then are now in the British Museum. (7)
