Bronze Pots (Matfen)

NZ 039 749. Two bronze vessels of Roman date were found in 1879 while a drain was being cut in a field on Shield Green at Ingoe, Matfen. One vessel has the inscription 'SABINIANVS F' stamped on the handle, the other has the inscription 'MAX:MINVS F'. The vessels were in the Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle until 1968 when they were transferred to the Museum of Antiquities, Newcastle upon Tyne. (1)

A letter of July 1879 reveals that the paterae were found '..on north fields of Shield Green to east of Tongues in Ingoe township'. (2)
