Site of Chapel (Belsay)
(NZ 08877837) Chapel (NR) (Site of). (1)
A domestic chapel, first mentioned in 1579, and pulled down c.1820, stood near the north east corner of The Hall at Belsay and its walls extended into the space now occupied by the study. (2)
A probably 18th century estate plan held by the owner of The Hall confirms the site noted by Hodgson. There are no visible remains. (3)
Plan and Account by RCHME 1988. (4)
Geophysical survey in 2016, in particular earth resistance, revealed an approximately L-shaped arrangement of wall type anomalies. These suggest structural building remains perhaps of either two phases or distinct ranges, with sub-divisions possibly indicating internal walls and room partitions; the anomalies coincide with a prominent earthwork mound. (5)
The floor of the study was removed at the time of RCHME investigation, but there was no trace of a chapel in the foundations of the Hall. (6)
