Kearsley (Matfen)

Nothing visible on available aerial photographs (RAF 1946). The fields surrounding the farm 'Kearsley' (NZ 02877528) are marked by strong rig and furrow, but no depopulation remains are traceable. (2)
Originally in the lordship of Prudhoe. In 1245 it contained villeins, cottars, a 'nativus' and two 'firmarii'. In 1296 there were eight taxpayers. It was described as a hamlet in 1586. In 1666 it was assessed with Ingoe for the Hearth Tax so its size at that date is unknown. In 1769 it contained three houses but only one steading now remains. The location of the site is not known since no earthworks can be seen.
Ridge and furrow can be seen to the north of the farmhouse enclosed by disused earthwork enclosures. (3)
