Cherryburn originally comprised a linear farmstead, which was replaced as the principal residence in the mid 19th century by a larger farmhouse further south. The current cottage and byre survive from the original farmstead. To the south-east of the cottage there was once a domestic extension, demolished in about 1850. Excavation in 2022 against the the south-east end of the cottage revealed the external wall of the extension and some details of the interior of this part of the dwelling. (2)
Evaluation in 2023 revealed a culvert adjacent to the south-east wall of the cottage. Recorded by watching brief in 2024. (3)(4)
