Medieval settlement is documented at Shilford from 1296 when there were two taxpayers. It was described as a hamlet in 1318 and was devastated by the Scots in 1346. In the 16th and 17th centuries only a single tenement is listed at Shilford, now there are two farms called High and Low Shilford. It is thought most likely that the medieval settlement was situated at Low Shilford, although there are no earthworks to be seen.
