Nafferton (Horsley)
In the 1296 Lay Subsidy seven taxpayers were recorded at Nafferton. The Poll Tax of 1377 listed 14 adults.
Nafferton's history in the 16th and 17th centuries is obscure. A rental of 1723 recorded the estate was held by three tenants. 'Old Nafferton' on the western edge of the township contains a steading and two houses; most of the estate is comprised in Nafferton Farm in the centre of the township.
Some vague earthworks at the east end of Old Nafferton may represent the village settlement. To the south of these lies ridge and furrow. (1)
Earthwork remains of field system, house platforms and possible hollow way are visible on aerial photograph. (2)
A series of incomplete, fragmentary bank defined field boundaries or enclosures of probable Medieval or Post Medieval date were seen as earthworks and mapped from air photographs. These fragmentary boundaries lie immediately to the north of Old Nafferton at NZ 0572 6551. These features may have defined enclosures measuring 111 m by 42 m; the smallest enclosure at NZ 0565 6551 measuring 7 m by 7 m. (3)
