Medieval settlement, Crossthwaite Scars, Holwick (Holwick)

This is a group of eight Early Medieval or Medieval shielings and an associated track. They are Scheduled Ancient Monuments, protected by law (1) (2).

A group of shielings and an associated track on Crossthwaite Scars. The group consists of the remains of 8 buildings occupying natural platforms on the north-east face of the scar. The track is visible as a substantial pony track on the lower ground, and zigzagging up the steep slope to the shielings. 3 of the buildings stand on a lower platform, while the other 5 are situated slightly to the south-west and on a higher platform. Shielings are small, seasonally occupied huts, built to provide shelter for herdsmen who tended animals grazing summer pasture on upland or marshland. They begin to appear in the early medieval period and seem to stop being constructed at the end of the 16th century. (5)
