Three pairs of Aged Mine Workers cottages built by mineworkers of Tursdale Colliery in 1921 as a First World War memorial. Photographic evidence on the North East War Memorials Project website shows that the houses were brick-built, rough cast on the exterior with metal sheet roofing and projected flat-roofed porches on the south facing sides (1). Streetview images of 2011 (2) show that the cottages have been modernised, the flat roofed porches replaced with gable fronts at a 90 degree angle to the main building and the addition of a white painted pebbledash render. A plaque on the outside of one of the cottages reads: "Tursdale Aged Mine Workers / War Memorial Homes / opened by / Colonel M.L. Bell, G.M.C. / October 15th 1921".

The cottages form a shallow arc all facing inwards towards a war memorial that was once surmounted by a statue. The statue has been removed in recent years so that just the pedestal remains within the grounds of the cottages to the front. (1)
