War Memorial Cross, Thornley Village (Thornley, Wear Valley)
Stone cross of Blomfield type on a triangular roadside island site at the north west outskirts of the village. Cross stands on a two-tier octagonal pedestal resting on three shallow octagonal steps, the whole enclosed with iron railings and a gate. Front face of the cross carries a large bronze sword pointing downwards, the hilt and guard oriented the same as the arms of the cross. Dedication is carried on the front face of the upper pedestal section: "In / thanksgiving / to God / for Victory / and / to the / memory of / our valiant / dead / 1914-1918". The two adjacent faces bear the names of First World War dead in single columns whilst the rear face carries the names of WW2 dead in a single column. Unveiled in the mid-1950's. (1-2)
