War Memorial Headstone (site), front garden of 118 Front Street, Sunniside (Sunniside)

A First World War memorial was once located here in the front garden of 118 Front Street, "The Bungalow". It took the form of a white marble headstone constructed of a scroll flanked and supported by two pillars decorated with elaborately carved lillies in half relief. It had a two-tier pedestal and stood just outside the front door of the house, visible from the street through the front gate. The dedication was at the top of the central scroll-shaped panel: "Erected by the inhabitants of / Sunniside to the memory / of men who fell in the / Great War 1914-1919. / Sunniside War Memorial". The names and regiments were listed in a single column below this, spreading onto the front riser of the upper tier of the pedestal. The lower pedestal bore a quotation. Unveiled 1920. (1-2)

It is not known where this memorial is now located. It is not visible on aerial photographs (3) or on streetview images (4) of the house. It might have been completely replaced as a village memorial by the new memorial in the Community Centre Garden on Flag Terrace.
