Oblique view of Seaham War Memorial 2016

Tall granite cross of Celtic wheel type, elaborately carved on the front face, on an octagonal pedestal with three shallow steps. Sort railing around base of pedestal to contain wreaths. The whole is set on a raised square platform with two steps and column-base corner stones of Heworth stone. Located on Terrace Green between North Terrace and the shore. Four faces of the pedestal are decorated with a wreath carved in half relief containing the words "The Immortal Dead" - adjoining faces of the pedestal bear the dates of the two World Wars. Dedication is carried on the base of the tapering cross shaft: "In / grateful / memory of / our / fellow / townsmen / who fell / in the / Great War / and the / World War. / The / Immortal / Dead / 1914-1918 1939-1945". It is documented that another war memorial once stood on Terrace Green in the form of a 36 pounder Russian gun, captured at Sebastapol and presented to the town by Queen Victoria as a memorial relic of the Crimean War in 1858. The fate of this memorial is unknown (2).
