War Memorial Institute (site of), Front Street, Sacriston (Sacriston)
Memorial institute constructed of pressed brick with stone porticoed entrance, timber framed clock tower structure on the roof over the corner with the entrance (1). Built on the site of the former Wesleyan Methodist Chapel which shows up on this site on second edition Ordnance Survey maps (2). Foundation stones of the institute were laid on Armisitce Day, 1922, by various local people, including: soldiers who had served in the First World War; local groups, charities and institutions. Upper storey of the building destroyed by fire in 1961, building fully renovated and re-opened in 1964. Aerial photographs of 2008 (3) show that the building was still standing but in 2009 the building was demolished. Streetview images (4) show that the site of the institute has been block-paved and pedestrianised; regenerated as part of a scheme commissioned by the people of Sacriston in 2009 called "The Pulse". The foundation stones of the old building have been incorporated into a seating area around a metal clock tower outside the new Fulforth Community Centre. War memorial plaques from within the Institute were saved from demolition and relocated to the new Community Centre (1,5).
