War Memorial Sarcophagus, St. Josephs Roman Catholic Churchyard, Murton (Murton)
Formerly just a plaque set underneath a crucifix in the south wall of the original church on this site. The church was demolished to make way for the present day St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church building but thankfully the plaque was retained and is now attached to the front of a sarcophagus-style memorial at the entrance of the churchyard just off the north east corner of the church. The memorial is stone built with a flat top and a sunken panel on the front carrying the plaque. The dates of the First World War flank a cross at centre top with 35 names listed in three columns below. The dates for WW2 also appear within the list making it difficult to ascertain which names relate to which war. (1)
